L'antico Ospedale dei Battuti

L

The Ancient Hospital of the Battuti

T
he old hospital of the confraternity of the “Battuti”, still existing in 1369 as documented, was built along the city walls near the main ways and was reached by sick people and pilgrims who were given hospitality there.  As the several lay confraternities of the 14th century, the “Battuti” did their penance by helping and assisting people in this hospital. In the course of the centuries this building underwent many changes but continued to be a hospital until 1877, when it moved to the present town hospital, whereas its old building became the seat of some businesses. Today this place has been renovated and it is used mainly for exhibitions, meetings and ceremonies. This charming place hosts the old chapel with frescoes of local painters of the 14th century on the ground floor, three other floors and the inner court, where time seems to stand still.

La chiesa dei Battuti a San Vito

A

Castle of San Vito

T

he origins of the town are related to a fortified building created as a defensive fortress with walls, already documented before the 13th century. The castle of San Vido was donated to the powerful patriarchate of Aquileia and became its seat; later it became the residence of the noble family Altan. The building today recalls the residence of a noble family rather than a defensive building. The imposing building is made up of several aggregated parts, the first part of the city walls, the pit and the wall basement partially resurfaced and rebuilt. Some beautiful frescos of different times have been found on the external and internal walls of the castle: decorations of the 15th and 18th century, representations of coat of arms of San Vito and Friuli and the portrait of two knights of the 15th century. Some of these works have been saved by Federico de Rocco, whom the archeological town museum is dedicated.

S

T

he theatre was the seat of the old municipal council, of the Court and of the chancellery. Together with the bell tower the theatre is the oldest building of the town. It was located near the Torre delle ore, that was connected to the castle. During the centuries it was often renovated until he assumed its definitive shape in the 15th and 16th century. A big space open to the square with wooden benches was once the corn, vegetables and cattle market. It was also the place for the auction sale of the goods made by the Jewish community who lived in San Vito. The first floor was used for the meetings of the Podestà (the high official) and the city councilors. From the 17th century the building was used for music and stage performances. The structure of the building is the one of a small Italian theatre of the 18th and 19th century.  The recent renovation has given back life to the theatre which has been rebuild in Venetian style exactly as it was and is now dedicated to the local composer Giangiacomo Arrigoni (1597-1675).
The theatre can be visited every day subject to reservation. Ufficio Beni ed Attività Culturali tel. 0434833295, Teatro “Gian Giacomo Arrigoni” tel. 043480251.

Palazzo Altan

Palazzo Altan a San Vito

I

Altan Palace in San Vito

T

he Altan Palace was built during the seventeenth century in the village of Taliano where, in 1603, the Altan family had bought a modest building. With some building modifications and with the purchase of Torre Grimana, in 1751, and the construction of the neoclassical oratory, the building complex was architecturally defined, as it is today. It is bordered by the two barchesse and drawn to the east by an exedra, with traces of seventeenth-century painting, attributable to the German painter Anton Joseph, reminiscent of the classic nymphaeum. The south and east perimeter of the complex is enclosed by ancient graves, walls and a circular tower attributed to the urban expansion of the patriarch Marino Grimani. The internal distribution system is the aggregate set of two tripartite plants, one of which is characterized by an internal corridor along the longitudinal axis. Also worthy of mention are the rooms of the eighteenth-century library and the rooms decorated with stuccos and frescoes.

Nel 1999 venne definitivamente ripristinato da Francesco Zanin di Codroipo secondo criteri filologici e approfonditi studi scientifici. his unique document of the Venetian organ-building school of the sixteenth century is an ideal medium for the interpretation of the music of the great organists of St. Mark's Basilica.

The instrument was commissioned in 1532 by the nobles of Valvason to Vincenzo Colombi, a famous organ builder born in Casale Monferrato and working in Venice.

In 1535 the construction of the choir was ordered to the "marangon" Stefano of Venice; Girolamo da Venezia was commissioned to perform the carvings and the painter Giovanni Antonio da Pordenone the "portelle"; in 1538, Tommaso da Udine completed the stupendous chest with gilding. Pordenone died in 1539, the great doors were subsequently completed by Pomponio Amalteo (1544). The San Vito painter, between 1551 and 1552, also painted the tiles of the choir, the two frescoed friezes and the sides of the box.
Reformed several times over the centuries and reduced to silence after the First World War, the organ in 1974 was restored to working order by the Paduan organ builder Alfredo Piccinelli.

In 1999 it was definitively restored by Francesco Zanin di Codroipo according to philological criteria and in-depth scientific studies. Meantone (1/4 comma) temperament, A3 = 492.5 Hz at 22°C.

Castello di Valvasone

I

Valvasone Castle

T

he Valvasone Castle is the central nucleus of the village of the same name which is now one of the "most beautiful villages in Italy" and also known as Borgo delle Spose. Built in the twelfth century on pre-existing late antiquities, the castle belonged to the ancient and noble family of "Valvasone", whose name, which in old German means "wolf farm", is represented in the coat of arms. Damaged and renovated several times, today it looks like a Renaissance palace. Over the centuries it has hosted several important personalities such as Pope Gregory XII in 1409, Pope Pius VI in 1782 and Napoleon Bonaparte in March 1797. Thanks to the recent restorations it is possible to admire a precious eighteenth-century theater surrounded by a splendid older frieze, dating back to end of the 16th century. In another room, frescoes from the second half of the 14th century were brought to light, depicting a rare secular cycle.

Chiesa dei Ss. Pietro e Paolo a Valvasone

N

Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Valvasone

I

n 1355 we have the first certain news of the existence of a "hospitale" perhaps managed by the confraternity of the Battuti, therefore probably to that date, or to an earlier date, a church located in the place where the current one is located can be traced back. During the fifteenth century the brotherhood, after a period of crisis, was reconstituted and dedicated to Sts. Pietro, Paolo and Antonio Abate.

«A concrete demonstration of the newfound vitality was the remodeling of the original chapel - seat of the fraternal itself and of the adjoining "hospitale" - on the basis of a project that involved the merger of the two ancient rooms into a single room, illuminated by long arched mullioned windows , and the construction or adaptation to a "hospitale" of an environment placed next to the chapel towards the south. To make the chapel consecrated in 1497, adorned with three altars, more splendid, in the first decade of the sixteenth century Pietro da Vicenza was ordered to brighten the walls with a series of devotional frescoes and also to provide an altarpiece for the main altar, meanwhile, already at the end of the previous century, an artist who was anonymous to us had committed the carving of a polyptych including, with the (preserved) figures of Saints Paul and Antonio Abate, without a doubt also a (lost) S Peter. [...] Between 1739 and 1760 the chapel, again by the fraternal, was subjected to further alteration which involved raising the perimeter walls of the nave and the presbytery, the latter compartment which was also ceilinged, the opening of new windows, the construction of a new high altar equipped with an altarpiece, the proceeds in the nave of the two side chapels to house the altars, on the right that of the Visitation and on the left the other dedicated to Ss. Valentino and Urbano, the location close to the counter-façade of a choir loft in which to place a seventeenth-century positive organ, the enlargement of the sacristy which then also functioned as an archive of the fraternal» (Fabio Metz).
